New World Record – Heaviest Bee Suit

Share

Now what would you do to get a world record? Zheng Wei from Zizhou County in western China, for example, wore a 184 lbs suit made out of live bees. Yes, bees, the angry prickly ones.

He actually had to make a special frame covered in foliage to hold that many bees – it must have been pretty noisy in there.

Believe it or not Zheng Wei actually broke the old world record. Just few days ago another Chinese bee keeper Shen Zonghong wore a 72 lbs bee suit.

55-Foot Unidentifiable Behemoth Washed Up on Chinese Shore

Share

A 55 feet long fish has been found in the seashore of Guangdong, China. According to a local newspaper, the big fish weighs at least 10,000 pounds.

Hwang, a 66-years-old fisherman living in the near area, said he has never seen anything like this in his whole life and that the fish was tied with ropes when it was first found.

Many people have flocked to see this strange specimen since its discovery, although its rotting corpse already emits a foul smell.

The people living in the area think the fish was caught by some fisherman but was abandoned due to its heavy weight, hence the ropes.

Due to the serious decay of the fish's body, it is almost impossible to identify the species, according to the local newspaper.

The fish was discovered on April 25th.

Call it Zonkey, Deebra, Donkra or Zedonk???

Share

A rare 'zonkey' has been born in a China zoo, the result of a moment of passion between a female zebra and a donkey who shared an enclosure at Xiamen Haicang Zoo in the south-east of the country.

The zonkey/donkra came into the world on Sunday, sporting cute striped legs and pale lines down its brown body.

Staff at the zoo say the creature had a difficult birth as it choked on its mum's amniotic fluid, causing it to asphyxiate.

'We had to hold him upside down to remove and clean the fluid from his nose and mouth,' revealed the zoo's Lin Qiaoyong.

The zonkey weighed 30kg and was nearly a metre tall when it eventually arrived. When a male zebra mates with a female donkey - the opposite scenario to our new stripey pal - it is known as a zebroid, a creature that's apparently more common than a zonkey/donkra, according to people who know about these types of things.

Half-naked Mexican Prisoner Busted while Trying Suitcase Escape

Share
A half-naked escapee curled up in the foetal position was discovered by Mexican prison guards after they opened a suitcase being carried by a woman visiting inmates.

Juan Ramirez Tijerina was caught by guards at a jail in Chetumal, Mexico, as his girlfriend Maria del Mar Arjona pulled along a 'bulky' looking black suitcase.

According to police spokesman Gerado Campos, the 19-year-old looked nervous as she attempted to leave the prison following a conjugal visit.

Suspicious wardens decided to check what was inside and to their surprise found themselves staring at a half-naked Ramirez . On inspection Ramirez - who is serving a 20-year sentence for illegal weapons possession, was found to be wearing only his socks and underwear.

Both were taken into custody and are awaiting charges for the bungled escape bid. It's not the worst escape bid though - in 2009 New Zealand inmates Regan Reti and Tiranara White attempted to flee a courthouse whilst handcuffed together.

They were captured on CCTV running along a street but forgot they were tied to one another and ran either side a of lamp post.

French Roller-skater Sets New World Record in Paris

Share

French roller-skating champion Taïg Khris has set a new world record by landing an extraordinary 29-metre (95 feet) jump in front of the Sacre Cœur Basilica in Paris.

Tens of thousands of Parisians gathered outside the famous landmark on Saturday to witness the 35-year-old's record-breaking jump. Khris' effort smashed the previous record of 24 metres, set by American Danny Way.

Having successfully completed his first jump, Khris repeated the stunt if front of the giant crowd, adding a front flip to send the cheers sky-high. Khris successfully landed both jumps but was forced to crash rather less gracefully into a bungalow-sized airbag in order to break his speed.

Saturday's jump was not the three-time world champion’s first record-breaking attempt. Last year, he dropped out of the first floor of the Eiffel Tower (almost 40 metres high) onto a vertical ramp, setting the world record for the highest roller-skate jump.

Khris’ passion for rollerblades began when he was only six years old and the Frenchman has gone on to compete around the globe in a number of professional tournaments.

He was awarded gold at the 2001 X-Games, after performing the first double-backflip in the competition's history.

World's largest hamburger created by chefs at Alameda County Fair

Share
Now that's a mouthful: Grill chefs at the Alameda County Fair wowed the crowds - and Guinness World Record officials - by unveiling the largest commercially available hamburger, weighing in at an incredible 777lbs.

The burger, which easily surpassed the previous record of 590lbs cooked by barbecue chef Ted Reader in Toronto, Canada, last May, was unveiled at the weekend.

It was created by the combined genius of Brett Enright from Juicy's Outlaw Grill in Phoenix and Nick Nicora from local company Ovations Food Services.

The burger took 15 hours to cook, having started at 5am in order to have the hefty meal ready for an 8pm sit-down, and was made with just one huge beef patty.

Mr Enright said he came up with the idea while on a month off from his job in December. 'I thought, "I bet I could build the world's largest burger",' he said. 'So I looked it up.'

Anyone that fancied a taste of the burger behemoth paid 99c, with all proceeds going to the Alameda County Community Food Bank. But a beast of a burger isn't the only claim to fame for the famous fair, which is held annually in Pleasanton, California.

Couple Win Wife-carrying Race for 3rd Time

Share

Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen have once again proved that they are the top wife-carrying team in Finland, after the couple won the infamous race for the third time running. The pair were victorious in the novelty race in Sonkajarvi on Sunday, taking the title for the third consecutive year.

No other couple in the 16-year history of the competition has managed to take three successive wife-carrying championships. The event sees husbands sprint 250 metres, leap hurdles and then cross a water pool in around one minute.

Throughout, each man must carry his 'wife' - competitors do not have to be married - over his shoulders, with her legs wrapped around his neck. However, their latest victory was hard-earned, with Taisto and Kristiina taking the victory by less than a second.

Miettinen said: 'The course was trickier this year due to the water obstacle, which was deeper. 'The weather conditions were also particularly tough, 30 degrees C is too much for me.'

As befitting any true champions, he then revealed that dedicated preparation - in this case practicing the course in ski boots beforehand - was the key to their victory. The pair will now enjoy Kristiina's weight in beer as their prize.

Legend has it that the sport of wife-carrying is based on the story of Finnish thief Herkko Rosvo-Ronkainen, who was said to steal food and women from nearby villages and run off carrying them over his head.

Bags Of Cobras Cause Panic on Vietnamese Train

Share
Railway officials have discovered snakes on a train in Vietnam — highly venomous king cobras in bags under a seat.

Railroad official Pham Quynh says passengers were terrified when four cloth bags containing the writhing cobras were spotted Friday. The snakes were alive but had their mouths stitched shut.

Quynh says the exact number of snakes was unclear but the bags weighed 100 pounds (45 kilograms).

Security staff removed the cobras, which were likely destined for restaurants in Hanoi. Their owner apparently escaped in the chaos.

Snake meat is considered a delicacy in Vietnam, but cobras are protected by law.

Quynh says the cobras were given to forest rangers who released them into the wild Saturday after no one claimed them.

Man Beheads Daughter for Having Affair

Share
A father allegedly beheaded his 20-year-old daughter at Sandokan village in Nagaur district near Jaipur, India on Wednesday.

The family members of the accused Premaram, 45 woke up at 2 am to the shock of their life. They saw the father holding a blood-stained sword and the beheaded daughter Sangeeta, 20 lying in a pool of blood on a "charpoy".

As per the FIR filed by family members, Premaram came onto the verandah of his house where his wife Shanti Devi, 39 and Sangeeta were sleeping on a "charpoy". He hit the girl's neck with a sharp-edged sword.

Immediately his wife, and others in the family who were sleeping there, woke up but Premaram fled, police said. "The girl had an affair with a boy of nearby village and the father was quite upset with it. May be this could be the reason behind this extreme step," a police officer said.

Martial Arts Street Cleaner

A road sweeper has become a local celebrity in China for her habit of using her broom as an exercise prop to keep in shape.

Zhang Xiufang, from Beijing, said: "I got this job when my husband became very ill and was unable to work. Our daughter is in primary school and we needed to pay our bills.

"Before I got the job I used to do Taichi both using my body and with a sword, and I missed them because with this Jon I start at 5am and finish at 4pm, but then one day I was swinging the broom and it reminded me of my old hobby - and then I started practicing again at work."

The martial arts broom master was spotted by a local man in Beijing's Chaoyang district who made a short video with his phone and uploaded it onto YouTube.

The video was such a hit that Zhang was invited to the capital top star in a TV programme in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu province.

She said: "I have even been asked by other street sweepers to show them some tricks - it's a great way to relax and stay fit in what is a very demanding job so why not?"

World's Shortest Man Crowned by Guinness on 18th Birthday

Share
Filipino Junrey Balawing, who is the size of a 1-year-old toddler, has been officially crowned the smallest man in the world by Guinness World Records on his 18th birthday.

Junrey takes over the title from previous record holder, Khagendra Thapa Magar of Nepal, who stands at 67 centimetres. Junrey stopped growing before he turned 2-years old.

He suffers from a series of medical conditions, has a child's demeanour and can only walk with some help, finding it too painful to stand for long periods of time because of his weak knees.

Junrey was crowned in his hometown of Sindangan in the southern Philippines, with his parents present and approximately 100 villagers and officials showering the coastal town's newly famous resident with a feast, cake, balloons and cash gifts.

Junrey's mother Concepcion grew teary-eyed during the ceremony. His father Reynaldo said they were happy about their son being named the smallest living man. Their other son and two daughters are all of an average size.

'Thank you,' Junrey told the crowd in a local dialect which was translated by his father.

Junrey blew out the candles on the cake and clapped heartily each time the crowd applauded. He was later heard saying 'Kapoy', or 'I'm tired'.

Guinness World Records representative Craig Glenday said he was struck by Junrey's lively personality and constant smile. He said: 'Although he's short, he takes that in stride. He has this cheeky smile.'

Aside from a Guinness certificate, the crown does not come with any cash award.

Mr Glenday said he hopes the international fame will bring in gifts and donations, particularly medical supplies to ensure Balawing's health.

His family said they tried to send Balawing to school but it withdrew him after he distracted other children's attention.

Local officials got the idea of informing the Guinness records committee about Balawing from journalists who learned about his size.

World's Scariest Tree founded in Suffolk

Share

The spooky looking beech tree can be found in the grounds of a nursing home in Stowlangtoft, Suffolk. This tree could be the root of all evil with its fearsome eyes, wide-open mouth and twisted set of teeth.

Many think the 70ft monstrosity is reminiscent of the Whomping Willow which lies in the grounds of Harry Potter's Hogwarts School. But David Garnham, who spotted the unsightly work of nature, thinks it looks more like Edvard Munch's Scream painting.

He told the Mail Online: 'It really does show nature's true beauty and also says a lot about what the imagination can conjure up.

'It's a bit like an enchanted forest... I can't imagine too many people wanting to go climbing up that tree. 'I've called the photo 'Nture's Scream' because I think it does have an uncanny resemblance to Edvard Munch's classic work.'

Stowlangtoft Hall was originally built for the Maitland Wilson family before it became a nursing home in 1969.

Kung Fu Card Hurler as a Career...

Share

A Chinese man has carved out a new career as a card sharp - by using his kung fu training to hurl playing cards like throwing knives.

Bai Dengchun, 23, can throw cards with such force and accuracy that he can slice a cucumber or burst a balloon from 16ft away.

His parents thought his unusual hobby was a waste of time - until a slot on TV led to an opening as a performer in magic shows.

Bai, from Qingdao, northern China's Shandong Province, showed off his skills by throwing 28 cards into a watermelon from 10ft away. He can also use his card-throwing talents to break an egg or knock off the end of a lit cigarette from a friend's mouth.

"The cards are like darts to me. I can precisely hit any target within a five metre radius," said Bai, who learnt kung fu from childhood.

Ironically, he developed his talent because he was such a poor poker player: "When I was young I loved playing poker but I always lost," he explained. "I would always end up throwing my hand away and eventually I realised I could throw the cards a long way away - and very accurately.

"Three years ago I decided to give up poker and take up throwing cards instead. Each month I used part of my salary to buy cards to practise with and it's paid off."

Boy Head Stuck in a Pressure Cooker

Share

It is not without reason that moms tell their kids to keep away from the kitchen. The case of 3 year-old Shivam, who got his head stuck in a pressure cooker while playing, underlines this. It took two hours of painstaking effort by a team of 12 doctors to release the child from the cooker, with the help of equipment like saw and screwdrivers.

Shivam, a resident of Rani Bagh in north Delhi, was playing with the pressure cooker on Monday evening when his head got stuck inside, sources said.

When all efforts failed, his parents took him to a nearby clinic. "Even doctors at the clinic failed to take his head out. Due to constant pulling, my son underwent tremendous pain. There were cuts on his eyelids and in the forehead area," said Sanjay, the child's father. The parents then took the child to Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital in Pitampura where the doctors had to cut the utensil.

"There was local swelling in the forehead and the eyelids and the child was crying constantly. We first thought of giving him anesthesia and operating on him. But, it did not work out. So, a group of doctors were called and with the help of screw drivers and large cutters the metal object was removed," said Dr Sameer Chikara, who was part of the team.

He said that the sides of the cooker had to be stuffed with cotton so that the child doesn't get hurt. Doctors said that the pressure cooker was local made and its edges was sharper than usual. Because of this, the child's head must have easily slipped inside and there was difficulty in pulling it out.

"Shivam's case should serve as a lesson for parents in future. They should not allow children to get into the kitchen and play with metal objects like these that can hurt them," said a senior hospital official.

Woman Sleeps 20ft Up in Tree

Baffled shoppers in a Chinese city couldn't work out where the snoring noise was coming from until they looked up.

And there - 20ft above them - was a homeless women curled up and fast asleep perched on a narrow tree branch.

Passers-by, in Lanzhou, Gansu province, couldn't believe the woman was able to sleep in her precarious position.

"We wouldn't have known where the snoring was coming from except one of her shoes fell off and hit someone on the head," said one shopper.

Police eventually persuaded her to come down to earth with sandwiches and a bottle of water.

Homeless Man Lives In Flood Pipe

Share

Mao Li, aged 30, has lived in the pipe, which lies beside a bridge in Haikou, Hainan province, southern China, for a year.

Mao Li’s one bedroom apartment even has its own front door. Public authorities have intervened and are forcing him to evacuate only because they have decided that the front door to Mao’s very humble dwelling “lowers the tone of the area.”

Luckily the intervention will work in his favour - as to make up for destroying his home officials have agreed to move him into an actual house.

A Haikou spokesman said: "He will be taken care of and given a proper home. We are a modern city - we can't have people living in pipes.”

Biggest & Oldest Spider Found in China!

Share

The largest fossilized spider ever found was discovered in Inner Mongolia, China and setting the new world record for the Largest Fossil Spider. This new species called Nephila jurassica, a 165 million-year-old golden orb weaver whose legs spanned an astonishing 15cm.

The fossil’s well-preserved state gave scientists enough details to identify it as an adult female Nephila jurassica where the common name of the arachnid is the golden orb weaver.

Golden orb spiders can weave the largest webs—creating golden silk discs almost five feet in diameter that are large enough to catch bats and birds.

Paul Selden, director of the Paleontological Institute at the University of Kansas, told Live Science that environmental change must have occurred in Inner Mongolia at some point, for golden orb weavers are now found in tropical environments.

He also said that the insect world was very different for these spiders. "There were many large or medium-sized flying insects around at that time on which it would have fed indiscriminately," said Selden to Live Science.

Additionally, Selden and his colleagues are interested in sexual dimorphism of Nephila jurassica. Female modern golden orb weavers are giant in comparison to their male partners. Selden and his colleagues wish to find a fossil of a male golden orb spider to study the differences.

The previous record was a Guinness world record for the oldest fossil spider trapped in amber has been dated at 125-135 million years old. It is from the family linyphiidae, and was discovered in Lebanon and analysed by David Penney and Paul Selden (both from University of Manchester, UK).

Details of the findings were published on April 20 in Biology Letters.

Dutch Football Team Signs 18-month-old Boy

Share

A one and a half year old Dutch footballer has shot his way to fame and a 10-year professional contract with his local champion's division football club.

Baerke van der Meij scored almost a million hits on YouTube after his father Jorg posted a film of the toddler shooting three balls into his toy box last week.

The boy and his family are supporters of the Venlose Voetbal Vereniging, or VVV, football team in the city of Venlo where Baerke's grandfather once played as a professional.

The toddler joined VVV's star midfielder Ken Leemans during a training session in De Koel Stadium on Tuesday before being offered the “symbolic” contract.

”The toddler's favourite position has not yet been determined. However, we can speak of a right-footed player with a very good kicking technique, perseverance and, importantly: football genes via his grandfather,” said a VVV Venlo press release.

Two-headed Calf Shocks Owner

Share

A Chinese grandmother collapsed with shock when her cow gave birth to a two-headed calf.

Dong Yubao, 65, of Gaoyang village, northern China's Hebei Province, said his wife Li Chunhua, 60, was helping the cow give birth.

"My wife and a neighbor were in the barn to help the cow through labor," he said. "The calf came out - heads first - and my wife fell to the floor when she saw the two heads and four eyes."

Dong said the cow had previously been a mother many times and her calves had all been healthy and normal. "I can't understand why she produced such a weird calf this time," he added.

The calf's two heads point in almost opposite directions. Both heads have their own eyes, nose and mouth but only three ears between them.

Dong said the two-headed calf can't stand unaided so his 16-year-old granddaughter Jinfeg is bottle-feeding it with sheep milk.

Seven close relatives of a girl, including her parents, were arrested on Friday in a remote village of Chhattisgarh after they chopped off her nose to punish her for eloping with and marrying a village boy.

Seven close relatives of a girl, including her parents, were arrested on Friday in a remote village of Chhattisgarh after they chopped off her nose to punish her for eloping with and marrying a village boy, police said.

The arrests were made from Rahmankapa village in the state's Kawardha district, some 280 km from Raipur.

Police said family members of 19-year-old Nanki Bai were highly upset after she eloped on April 19 with village boy Narendra, 19. The boy and the girl returned on April 20 after getting married at a temple in Raipur.

"After returning to the village, the girl was living with her husband's family," Sushil Malik, head of Pandariya police station that covers Rahmankapa village, told IANS over phone.

"The girl's parents and five other close relatives stormed into her in-laws' house and dragged her into a room and chopped off her nose to punish her for love marriage," he added.

Malik added that the girl's family chose to attack her when most of her in-laws were not home.

Later, the girl registered a police complaint and finally her parents and five other relatives, including three women, were arrested for house-trespass, criminal intimidation, causing injury by dangerous weapons and other offences.

Man Jabs Crocodile's Eye to Escape

Share

An Australian man had to jab a crocodile in the eyes to force its jaws off his arm after it leapt from the water and bit him during a fishing trip.

The man's hand was badly mauled in the attack on the Adelaide River, southeast of Darwin, which took place as his friend was sleeping in the back of their boat overnight Saturday, according to the Northern Territory News.

He had surgery and was recovering in hospital, the report said.

A second crocodile washed up on a Darwin beach over the weekend without a head or tail after falling victim to trophy hunters, rangers said. "They took the head for a trophy and the tail for meat," he told ABC radio.

An average of two people are killed each year in Australia by saltwater crocodiles, known locally as "salties", which can grow up to seven metres (23 feet) long and weigh more than a tonne.

Anti-Porn Indonesian MP Caught Watching Porn

Share

An Indonesian member of Parliament has resigned after being caught by a photographer watching porn on his tablet during a debate. The irony: this MP also helped pass one of the strictest anti-porn laws in the country.

Arifinto, who oversees a parliamentary commission dealing with transportation, telecommunications and rural development, was an outspoken supporter of the [anti-porn] law. He was caught watching the video clip for several minutes as fellow legislators debated plans to build a new parliament building.

In almost poetic irony, if he is found guilty of downloading a pornographic movie, which the picture seems to indicate, he might find himself confronted with the same strict and unforgiving anti porn law that he himself helped to create!

Magnum Café ~ Indonesian Luxury Ice Cream

Share

Jakarta is a city of dynamic change and burgeoning growth particularly among the rapidly growing middle classes. There is much competition in all things, whether it is watching the latest Hollywood flick, owning the trendiest gadget or being seen at the cool Magnum Café, which opened last February in central Jakarta.

For many of us, Magnum conjures images of a handsome, mustached private detective who lived in Hawaii and rescued damsels in distress and righted wrongs for a few years.  But in Indonesia, the name Magnum has come to mean something else even more delectable.

Just as popular as the café itself is its offshoot, Magnum Ice Cream, a brand launched by Unilever, an Indonesian consumer goods conglomerate. Ice cream lovers line up in queues that get longer each day as they wait patiently for the unique chocolate-coated ice cream on a stick.

“It’s the Belgian chocolate that makes it different from other ice creams. The chocolate is amazing,” says Githa, a teacher in Jakarta.

Magnums can be enjoyed in different delicious ways. The chocolate can act as a dipping sauce into almost everything the café has to offer: appetizers, main courses, desserts and cocktails. An Italian chef developed the devastating menu which features: Waffle de Aristocrat, Goblet of Chocolate, Crown Jewel and Truffle Royale.

Magnum is not just ice cream. Its consumption marks an elite journey into celebrity, luxury and a lifestyle in view but just barely out of reach. Television stars such as Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives and actor, Benicio del Toro, have endorsed the “luxury” ice cream.

The café sells hundreds of Magnums each day and charges about $1.38 for each one. This may seem cheap by US standards but isn’t when juxtaposed with the fact that according to the World Bank data, the average Indonesian lives on less than $6 per day.

Woman Grows Hair for 21 years

Share

A Chinese woman who hasn't cut her hair for 21 years now has hair that measures 3.6 metres in length.

Jiang Aixiu from Fushun, central China's Henan Province, last had a haircut in 1990. Jiang explained: "I went to get my hair cut, but the hairdresser suggested me to keep it as its quality is good."

Jiang never expected her hair would grow so fast and so long. She added: "I didn't eat anything special or use any special shampoos."

Each year Jiang's hair grows up to 20 centimeters. She continued: "I have to wash my hair section by section, and it takes at least 2 hours to wash it all."

Jiang has been offered 10,000 Yuan for her hair, but she refused. However, now Jiang plans to cut off her long hair, as doctors say the long hair absorbs too much nutrition from her head, which is not good for her health.

"It's better for me to take it off, as it's too much on my head," Jiang concluded.

Blind Girl Works as Interpreter

Share

A blind schoolgirl who is fluent in four languages has become the youngest interpreter to work at the European Parliament - at the age of 10. Alexia Sloane, from Cambridge, lost her sight when she was 2-years-old after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour whilst on holiday in France.

But despite her disability the little girl has excelled at languages and at the age of 10 she is already fluent in English, French, Spanish and Mandarin - and is learning German. Now she has fulfilled her dream of working as an interpreter after East of England MEP Robert Sturdy invited her to the European Parliament in Brussels.

"There is usually a minimum age requirement of 14 just to enter the European Parliament so for Alexia to interpret there at the age of 10 was amazing," said mum Isabelle.

Alexia has been tri-lingual since birth as her mum is half French and half Spanish and her dad Richard is English. "She has always been very good at languages and shown an interest from a very young age," added Isabelle, who also has a 4-year-old daughter Melissa.

Alexia has dreamed of becoming an interpreter since she was 6 and chose to go to the European Parliament as her prize when she won the Young Achiever Community Award of the Year.

She asked if she could shadow interpreters and MEP Robert Sturdy agreed to take her along as his guest. "It was fantastic and I'm absolutely determined now to become an interpreter," said Alexia. "Nothing can stop me."

Armless Man Loves to Paint

A man without arms has become the vice curator of an art museum in China. Huang Guofu, 41 is the vice curator of Chongqing Talents Museum, and is planning to paint a long scroll of the scenes of old Chongqing.

By biting a chopstick in his mouth and using his right foot to clamp a pen to touch the keyboard, Huang can use the computer agilely. "I am searching materials and pictures of old Chongqing, and preparing the materials for my upcoming creations," said Huang.

Last year Huang was appointed the vice-curator of the newly established museum for his never-give-up spirit and his artistic achievements. Huang was born in Tongnan, Chongqing. When he was four, he lost both his arms after suffering electric shocks.

He started to have a strong interest in painting when he was 12. Each day after school, Huang would paint works with his feet of the pictures in his textbook. His works were recommended for an exhibition in the local culture center, and won great success. Then Huang started his professional studies in the city arts centre.

SWITL to Replace Human Hand ?

Share

SWITL Robotic Hand, a patent-pending robot hand - originally revealed back in October, seems to be capable of picking up liquids, messy mayonaise and other sauces without altering or changing its gooey shape.

Created by the food industry machine developer - Furukawa Kikou, the SWITL robotic hand was developed with the baking industry in mind. The device uses some sort of conveyor system to automate certain parts of a bakery's production line, handling various products that are deemed too soft for our clumsy human hands.

Unfortunately, Furukawa Kikou is not revealing any details about the science behind SWITL.

Doctor Serves Patients on Horseback

As inhabitants live scattered around the plateau, it is not easy for local people to see doctors. So Dr. Sonam's mobile clinic, also known as "clinic on horseback", has become very popular because he rides his horse to deliver medical services to patients homes every day over the past 13 years at Niandi town in northwest China's Qinghai Province.

Niandi Town is located 3,250 meters above sea level on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. About 300 families live in this 15-square-kilometer mountain area. It has become an everyday work for Dr. Sonam to gallop over hills to provide medical services to residents living on the other side of the mountain.

It takes at least 4 to 5 hours to ride from Sonam's home to the nearest village. He often cannot see anybody in hours, so he can only sing to the mountains to cheer himself up in his lonely trip.

"When I feel lonely, I would start singing. This song is about Tibetan New Year, and I sing it to express my best wishes for my patients to recover soon," said Sonam.

Dr. Sonam’s mobile clinic is well loved and respected and locals look forward to his frequent visits.

World’s Most Expensive Dog ...

Share
An 11-month old Tibetan Mastiff pup named Big Splash (“Hong Dong” in Chinese) recently sold in the Chinese city of Qingdao for 10 million yuan (US $1.5 million).

The 3-foot-tall, 180-pound dog is one of a breed that has been around since time immemorial. Tibetan mastiffs are said to have guarded nomad camps and monasteries, and are rarely seen outside of Tibet.

Thought to be among the world’s oldest and most respected breeds, legend claims that Genghis Khan had a Tibetan mastiff and so did the Buddha. The breed was also popular among European royalty and in the early 19th century, King George IV owned a pair of Tibetan Mastiffs.

Over the past several years, they have become status symbols among China’s growing wealthy classes, driving up their price from a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands.

Raised on a diet of beef, chicken, abalone and sea cucumber, “he is a perfect specimen,” his breeder, identified only as Mr. Lou, told the British newspaper.

“He has excellent genes and will be a good breeding dog. When I started in this business, 10 years ago, I never thought we would see such a price.” Lou declined to identify Big Splash’s new owner, other than to say that he is a multimillionaire who made his fortune in coal.

And given the rising popularity of the breed, it may be that the owner can make some of his investment back by offering the dog’s services at stud. Some breeders are willing to pay as much as $100,000 to get a dipper out of Big Splash’s gene pool.

Moonwalking Romanian Politician Ordered to Stop Dancing

Share
A moonwalking Romanian politician has been ordered by leaders of his political party to tone down his antics. Edmond Talmacean, a 40-year-old Bucharest-based politician, has inspired national headlines with his Michael Jackson-inspired moonwalk on a television show and his impersonations of the late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

His impersonation of a well-known sports commentator during a serious political debate also stunned other lawmakers into silence. "Dancing is another kind of political message to appeal to the younger generation, that it is good to have fun ... that you can go to a disco and dance," Mr Talmacean said.

Party leaders, however, say enough is enough and have ordered him to tone down. Prime Minister Emil Boc declared the routine was more suited to "showbiz" than politics, while Vasile Blaga of the Democratic Liberal Party said the fringe lawmaker should head over to the TV program "Dancing with the Stars."

'Dead Alien' Body Found in Siberia ?

Share

A video claiming to show alien remains in Irkutsk region of southern Siberia has become a internet sensation, garnering more than a million hits.

The video, which many viewers have dismissed as an elaborate hoax, was allegedly filmed near the town of Irkutsk close to Russia’s Lake Baikal in recent weeks.

In it, a local is shown leading a camera man to a snowy spot on the edge of a forest where he points out the remains of “the alien,” a tiny being which has had one of its legs ripped off. The creature looks like an extra from Hollywood central casting with an enlarged cranium, hollow eyes, and a small reddish body.

One of the men in the video is heard giving an expletive-laden commentary in Russian, adding that a dog originally sniffed “the alien” out.

The video has sparked conspiracy theories of an alien crash landing in the area. Alleged UFO sightings in the vicinity are not uncommon, and some viewers speculated that the Russian military had not cleaned up the area after a UFO crash properly overlooking the tiny corpse.

The video was released after villagers in the area reported seeing bright orange lights in the sky last month with one witness capturing the mystery lights on his or her mobile phone. At least one national TV news channel reported the alleged sighting with the headline “Uninvited Guests.”

QTvan - The world's Smallest Caravan

Share

Designed to be towed by a mobility scooter, the battery powered caravan features a full-sized bed, 19 inch television, a drinks cabinet and boasts tea-making facilities.

The tiny caravan, measures 2m x 75cm and retails at a price of £5,500. It is so compact it can be towed inside a supermarket at a top speed of 5mph.

Developed by Environmental Transport Agency (ETA), the caravan is designed to highlight the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover and face the prospect of a long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat.

The ETA called it the QTvan, because it caters to three very British obsessions: queuing, tea and caravans.

But ETA warns that the QTvan is best-suited to local trips. If it is used to venture further afield, extra time should be allowed. For example, a trip from London to a popular caravanning destination like the New Forest would take 2 days, while a journey to Whitby would take one week.

QTvan Specifications:
● QTvan is the world’s most environmentally-friendly caravan, entirely using carbon neutral.
● Range: 30 miles on a single charge
● Power: 240v hook up or battery
● Entertainment: 19” TV, radio, alarm clock, book shelves
● Accommodation: Full-sized single bed
● Cooking facilities: Kettle, drinks cabinet
● Optional extras include: Solar roof panels, air horn and extra-wide wing mirror for mobility scooter, satellite dish, gaming console, central heating, external luggage rack, bespoke paint.

Hi-tech Clamp-down for Hotel Towel Thieves

Share
Hotels are deploying new technology to combat one of the menaces of the hospitality industry - the towel thief.

The anti-theft system, which could soon be arriving in Britain, uses washable radio-frequency tags stitched into towels, bathrobes and other linen which can trigger an alarm if removed from the premises.

The US company which patented the technology said a Honolulu hotel in Hawaii which introduced the tags last summer had seen towel theft tumble from 4,000 a month to just 750 (81% decrease), saving more than £9,000 a month.

"Any given month, hotels can lose 5% to 20% of towels, sheets and robes. That gets expensive with the rising cost of cotton," said William Serbin, executive vice-president of Linen Technology Tracking of Miami. The company uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips, similar to those deployed in shop security tags and London Transport's Oyster card scheme, which can track linen to and from the laundry, at pool kiosks and detect stolen items as they are taken off the premises.

Serbin declined to name the properties (the other two are in Miami and Manhattan), but an industry insider told Civil Beat the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki is the unnamed hotel referenced in the story.

Bullet-Proof Glass Failed Robbery

Share

Two robbers shot, hammered and kicked at glass display cases at a Hawaii jewelry store, but then were  forced to flee when they realized the cases were made of bullet-proof glass.

A security video camera showed the men attempting to smash and shoot their way into the display cases. However their attempts were foiled by reinforced glass which refused to shatter despite their efforts.

Later, the men escaped, but a witness noted the license plate number on their getaway car. The car was later determined to have been stolen and was found hours later abandoned and engulfed in flames.

Honolulu police are appealing to the public to help in finding the suspects and published descriptions of them on a crime-stoppers website.

Thailand set a new Guinness World Record for water pistol fight as 3,477 people drenched each other in a 10-minute shootout.

Thousands of Thailand people and foreign tourists participated in an event where they were armed with water pistols, faced each other outside one of the biggest shopping centers of Bangkok for a 10 minute shootout.

This event is to celebrate Thailand's Songkran Water Festival. The three-day Songkran (meaning entering the new) festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year's Day from 13 to 15 April.

During festivities, people spray water on each other's faces to symbolise washing away the sins from the old year. The previous largest water fight world record was set in Spain in 2007.

Hairiest Girls Happy with World Record

Share

Supatra Sasuphan is celebrating after being inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's hairiest girl. She has been teased her entire life by other children calling her “monkey face” and “wolf girl”, but now the 11-year-old girl from Thailand has been given a Guinness World Record and she says it has helped her become extremely popular at school. "I'm very happy to be in the Guinness World Records! A lot of people have to do a lot to get in," she said.

Supatra's title was confirmed after a quick grilling from Guinness World Record executives. Supatra, nicknamed Nat, is one of only 50 documented cases of Ambras Syndrome since the Middle Ages. Before the disease was understood, sufferers were branded 'werewolves,' but the rare genetic condition, which is the result of a faulty chromosome, causes thick hair to grow all over her face, ears, arms and legs.

The Mumbai Ornamental Skateboard Released

Share

The combination of a worldwide sports craze with Mumbai's traditional craftsmanship, and under the supervision of German curator Tobias Megerle, a dozen of Mahim woodcarvers produced their own take on the traditional skateboard. The project -- Final Cut -- will be showcased at THE LOFT at Lower Parel.

Megerle is a skateboard enthusiast who has been seeking a new and revolutionary skateboard design that could propel forth a whole new culture. After searching the world, he finally found his inspiration in the Mahim neighborhood of Mumbai, India.

“The first time I drove past, I was magically attracted to the carved wooden objects in Mahim — all the open workshops, the woodcarvers sitting on the floor with their traditional tools, working on their items, the whole atmosphere,” he said.

Inspired by what he saw, Megerle started visiting the woodcarver shops and learning more about their craft and decided to enlist 12 of the woodcarvers to combine their traditional art with “the good old skateboard,” a concept that was quite new to many of them.

After working weeks and months, the woodcarvers have finally managed to construct fully fictional skateboards that are elegant and imaginative, but also usable.

Farmer Dyes Sheep Orange to Stop Theft

Share

A UK farmer has dyed his sheep bright orange in an attempt to stop thieves stealing from his flock. The farmer, John Heard works on a remote part of moorland on Dartmoor in Devon, England, decided to paint the woolly beasts after thieves targeted his flock of 250 blackfaced ewes.

"It produces strange-looking sheep but it has done the trick and I haven’t lost one this year," said Mr Heard, who says 200 of his sheep have been stolen in the past few years. "It works because they are so easy to distinguish making it easier for me and my neighbours to keep a wary eye out for them."

"Sheep rustling has become a big problem with ewes worth around £140 each," the 48-year-old livestock farmer said.

The farmer got his inspiration after his son James told him about a Scottish farmer who had dyed his sheep before an agricultural show. The harmless non-toxic dye eventually wears off with no side effects and seems to have put a stop to the thefts.

The National Farmers' Union said there had been a fivefold increase in sheep thefts this year, due to the high price of lamb.

CCTV Caught Man Drive 2 Bumper Car on the Road

Share

Police Officer in China, Liu Yulin was watching CCTV footage of a road in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province when the bumper cars came into view.

He said: 'I saw on the screen that a man was driving two bumper cars. He sat in between the cars, and each foot stepped onto one gas pedal. I immediately radioed the officer at that road section to go and check.'

Officer Xiao Hu then stopped the yellow cars and their owner, a Mr Zhang, who said he was moving them to a local park. He claimed he was driving them there because it was the most economic way of transporting them.

According to Mr Zhang it was the first time he had driven the bumper cars on the street, and he hadn't realised it was illegal. Officer Xiao said: 'Traffic regulations say that bumper cars are not engine vehicles, so they can't drive onto street.'

However, because the law doesn't stipulate what punishment a bumper car driver should receive Zhang just got a warning.

World's Tallest Teen Goes to Thailand

Share
Malee Duangdee holds the record for being the world’s tallest teenager with 2.083m (6ft 10in) tall and weighs 127kg. But the 19-year-old from the Trat province in eastern Thailand has suffered painful school memories of bullies and a lifetime of loneliness. “I used to feel like a freak, school children used to bully me and call me names,” she said.

"Since leaving school I've tried to feel more comfortable with who I am," Malee said. Taunted by her classmates while she was at school, Malee now spends all her time with her family.

Malee’s mother, Ji, 40, did not realise Malee was ‘different’ until she was around 9-years-old when she began to grow much faster than her school friends. “She looked different to her friends and I got a little worried,” Ji said. “I took her to the doctor because I wanted to be sure there was nothing seriously wrong with her.”

But Malee was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which was pressing on a nerve causing a hormone imbalance. Malee has also lost the sight in her eyes as a result. “I’ve been tall for as long as I can remember and taking medication is part of my daily life,” she said. “But as I’ve got older my eye sight has got worse and it’s really difficult for me to get around.”

Malee needs an injection every 3 months to control the benign brain tumour and stop her from growing. But it’s costing the family almost £2,000 a time. “The injections have really helped to control her growth but they are expensive,” said Ji.
