Shock Over RM13,000 Bill for Kampung Meal

After enjoying lunch of kampung (traditional village) food that included patin fish (silver catfish) at a restaurant here recently, a group of 50 customers was shocked to be billed RM13,000 ($4,302 USD). The incident happened in Temerloh city, Malaysia's Pahang state.

According to one of the diners who did not wish to be identified, he had taken his friends to lunch at the restaurant which served kampung food, including freshwater fish, ulam (herbal plants) and kampung vegetables. He said after the meal, the restaurant owner handed him a bill of RM13,000, and he had no choice but to pay it. 

"The bill came to about RM260 ($86 USD) per person, which was more expensive than eating at a 6-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur!" he told Bernama, here.

Fake Eggs goes in Malaysia...

The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has warned consumers to be wary of the existence of fake eggs being sold in the market. These eggs have an unusual shape and when cooked do not smell or taste like real ones.

Recently, a woman who bought a tray of eggs in Pulau Tikus had a shock when she found them to be “fake eggs”. She only suspected that they were fake after she overheard a caller complaining about fake eggs over a radio programme.

CAP president said the housewife had brought the eggs to his office after finding something fishy when she tried to cook them. She told us that the eggs did not smell like real eggs and were tasteless. It was also of unusual shapes and larger than real eggs. The fake egg also had a rougher surface than the real one.

CAP president, S.M. Mohamed Idris said upon examination it was found that the eggs were unusually large and when broken there was no sign of chalazae (opaque ropes of egg white which holds the egg yolk in the centre of the shell). The eggs were also devoid of any smell associated with real eggs, and white and yolk quickly mixed together, unlike that of real eggs.

Malaysian Police Recover 700,000 Stolen Condoms

The police today said they had recovered more than 700,000 ultrathin condoms that went missing while being exported to Japan, and arrested six people over the incident.

Perak police chief Shukri Dahalan told AFP that 99.0% of the condoms stolen had been recovered and would be returned to manufacturers Sagami Rubber Industries.

The company said last month that about 726,000 polyurethane condoms, with a retail value of around $1.5 million, were loaded into a container at a factory in Malaysia, but the shipment was empty when it arrived in Tokyo.

“We arrested six persons including the lorry driver involved in the shipment, and following information from the suspects, we were able to locate 258 boxes filled with condoms at a house outside Kuala Lumpur and in a warehouse near Port Klang in Selangor,” he said. “The boxes appeared intact as they were being stored in different locations while the men were looking for buyers,” Shukri added.

“With the arrest of the men and the recovery of the condoms, the case is now closed.” He said four of the men have been released on police bail, while two are still being held on remand, with all six expected to face charges.

If found guilty, he said the six could face up to 10 years in jail, whipping and a fine. Freight forwarders say that goods being shipped out of Malaysia go missing routinely and that many cases are inside jobs.

Soup Ladle Saves Husband From Tiger Attack

Such is the weird tale of a Malaysian wife who saved her husband from the jaws of certain death by beating a tiger over the head with a soup ladle!

Tambun Dedin, aged 60, was hunting squirrels in the forest near his home in northern Malaysia when he came face to face with the deadly cat that immediately pounced on him.

“I was trailing a squirrel and crouched to shoot it with my blowpipe when I saw the tiger… I tried to escape by climbing up a tree, but the tiger caught up with me and dragged me down. I was terrified and I used all my strength to punch the animal in the face, but it would not budge…. I had to wrestle with it to keep its jaws away from me, and it would have clawed me to death if my wife had not arrived,” said Tambun.

But the tiger never had to deal with Han Besau, Tambun’s 55-year-old wife, who heard her husband’s screams and came running and yelling to the rescue, brandishing a wooden spoon she had been using to cook soup.

She bashed the tiger over the head, causing it to leave the scene and deal with more manageable and less angry prey. Tambun’s village is so remote that he had to wait more than 10 hours for help to arrive before he could be taken to the nearest hospital.

He is currently recovering from an operation on the many lacerations to his face and legs. The residents of his village, which is located some 160 miles north of Kuala Lumpur, are hailing his wife as a heroine.

It is estimated that there are about 200 tigers in the jungles north of Kuala Lumpur. Local wildlife officials have sent rangers to track down the big cat and chase it deeper into the jungle where it cannot pose a threat to people (and where it would be too far away to incur Han’s future wrath).

Engineering the Impossible was a ground-breaking 2-hour special, created and written by Alan Lindgren and produced by Powderhouse Productions for the Discovery Channel. It focused on three incredible, yet physically possible, engineering projects: the nine mile (14 km)-long Gibralter Bridge, the 170-story Millennium Tower and the 4000+-foot-long Freedom Ship. After the success of this program, Discovery commissioned Powderhouse to produce the first season of the 10-part series, Extreme Engineering, whose episodes were written by Alan Lindgren, Ed Fields and several other Powderhouse writer-producers. Like Engineering the Impossible, the first season of Extreme Engineering focused on extreme projects of the future. Season 2 (and all seasons since) featured projects already in construction around the world.

700,000 Japanese Condoms Disappear

Malaysian police said Tuesday they were investigating the disappearance of more than 700,000 ultrathin condoms which went missing in transit between Malaysia and Japan.

Sagami Rubber Industries, Japan's first condom maker, said last week that the shipment was loaded into a container at its factory in northern Malaysia, but that it was empty with the locks replaced when it arrived in Tokyo.

"We take the matter of the missing condoms very seriously... we are investigating the matter," a Malaysian police spokesman told AFP.

In Malaysia, engineers faced two construction problems: traffic and stormwater. Their solution: to combine both challenges in one smart tunnel.

SMART is an acronym for Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel, a project under the Federal Government initiated to alleviate the flooding problem in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur.

The SMART system will be able to divert large volumes of flood water from entering this critical stretch via a holding pond, bypass tunnel and storage reservoir. This will reduce the flood water level at the Jalan Tun Perak Bridge, preventing spillover.

French 'Spiderman' climbs Petronas Towers in Malaysia

French "Spiderman" Alain Robert was arrested Tuesday after successfully scaling Malaysia's Petronas Towers, in his third attempt on the nation's tallest structure, police said.

The 46-year-old began climbing the 88-storey building before dawn and reached the top before being discovered by security officials, Kuala Lumpur police chief Muhammad Sabtu Osman told AFP.

"We have taken him back to the police station for questioning and checking his passport. He can be charged for criminal trespass," he told AFP.

Robert first tried to scale the building on March 20, 1997, and made a second unsuccessful attempt in 2007 after which he was freed without charge.

He has been nicknamed "Spiderman" for his high-profile escapades, which have included climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The 452-metre (1,483-feet) Petronas Twin Towers, which were completed in 1998, were for several years the world's tallest buildings until being upstaged by Taipei 101 among others.
